Besides figure skating, I also love to watch ballet. However, I’ve never had special favorite ballet dancer in the past.
I just love to watch beautiful elegant movements of Russian ladies ballet dancers and also was interested in the story.
My favorite theme was always “ Giselle “ and “ Nut cracker”.
Recently, I found an amazing men’s ballet dancer called “ Daniil Simkin “ who is from Austria.
I found him in Johnny ( Weir )’s Myspace a several month ago but at that time my mind was full of about skating COP, so I didn’t pay attention for his performances.
And after the skating COP season (2007-2008 ) was over , one day there was an American men’s ballet dancer documentary on TV, and by chance, my husband and I both saw it.
We both were not so inspired with the performances the TV program showed, because it looked like sports, acrobat or Chinese Kung fu , instead of classic ballet. More technically performance than artistry.
It’s too masculine for me...
I wonder is it because of cultural reason ?
Is this ballet ??
I was getting confused because it was far from my image of classic ballet. It seems that everything in America is more sports, and masculinity.
There are no grace and no elegant movements. And it’s the same for both women and men.
So I started watching another men’s ballet dancers who are from different countries, from Russia and Japan and other countries.
I remember Tetsuya Kumakawa was a famous ballet dancer in Japan while I was there, but I’ve never been impressed with his performances. I always prefer to see ladies movements because there was grace and beauty.
But I found Daniil Simkin from Austria ( the picture above ), after watching his most recent performance on you tube. He is an amazing talent.
Very beautiful , graceful, artistic, effortless and also has power in it.
He has very sensitive movements and has big impact which others don’t have. Especially his hands movements are so magical.
How they use hands and finger tips are very difficult to make natural artistry and I believe it’s one of the talent. He is still only 20 years old. He is great ! I really admire the person who can move like that.
Interesting thing is both Johnny Weir and Daniil Simkin love Mikhail Baryshnikov.
I think Mikhail was a great dancer but Johnny and Daniil are more beautiful to watch.
I also love Emanuel Sandhu’s ( figure skater ) dance. Sandhu and Daniil ‘s hand, arm movements are similar, very sensitive and elegant and magical.
I care those small things a lot when I watch ballet, dance and figure skating. Because to me it’s one of the most important parts to make good art and their natural expression.
I did notice that now a days, classical style of artistry is disappearing from ballet and it is becoming more like sports.
Maybe people are more interested in technical part than art. Same for Figure skating.
But I’m glad I can see two wonderful artists, Johnny and Daniil and I can watch their performances for a while.
