We went to see Styx Live concert on May 4 !!!
What a magical night !!!
We were so excited to know they would be touring our city.
The concert was held at the amphitheater, in Tucson, and this event area is outside and is located next to the Casino Del Sol building.
We arrived at the Casino place around 7pm, and looked around the Casino.
It was like a museum , they made it like it’s open air, like it’s outside but it’s actually inside.
The ceiling was painted like the sky with a sunset, looked real. I might have tried one of the games if we had enough time there.
Before the show, while we were waiting in line to show our tickets, the speakers were playing Deep Purple’s music “ Smoke on the Water “ and people around us started singing together.
Many of the audience looked similar ages as us, same generation people and somehow I felt comfortable to be surrounded by them.
There were also many young people with their parents.
My impression was young people there were polite and knowing manners, parents are teaching their kids well.
Our seats were on the right side ( Tommy Shaw’s side ) facing the stage, and the seats were better than we expected.
We were late to get the tickets.
Next time I will be more careful for the information for the tour date and opening ticket’s selling date and will definitely get front seat .
Opening music was our favorite song “ Blue Collar Man “ !!!!!!
I was so happy, was very excited to see them !!!
So we were jumping up when they appeared on the stage and heard the introduction sounds of Blue Collar Man.
Tommy Shaw ’s charisma was huge, he looked cool with his fashion, wearing a jacket.
In the beginning my eyes were all on Tommy.
And of course Tommy’s singing was perfect.
I’m so loving his singing especially for Blue Collar Man.
There was a large screen next to the stage which showed Tommy Shaw and all the other members, more closeup.
Next song was “ The Grand Illusion “ !!!
Lawrence !!
Lawrence’s keyboard technique is incredible.
He was playing the keyboard from behind his back !!!, and also playing from opposite side of the keyboard !!!
Same goes for James Young, who at one point, was playing his guitar from the back, behind his head.
It looked easy for them.
They remind me of what I’ve read about the legendary pianist Franz Liszt.
Tommy was perfect and awesome technique as always, with great showmanship.
And I always love Todd Sucherman’s amazing drumming. So powerful !!!
As well as the booming bass sounds of Ricky Phillips and Chuck Panozzo !
Besides their Bass player Ricky Philipps, their original Bass player was also there, Chuck Panozzo.
Great to see he was there too !
I was surprised to know Ricky Phillips age, which is one year older than Tommy.
Ricky is also ageless, like Tommy.
There were only two songs I didn’t know, but I really liked one of the them which was a classic heavy metal style.
There were 5 teenage girls in front of us who looked like about 14 to 16 years old, they were close to the stage and were standing and dancing to the music all the time.
It was great to see such young Styx fans ! They may be Tommy girls.
I was so glad they played most of my favorite songs and songs I know.
Only songs they didn’t play that I was missing were “ Boat of the river “ and “ Crystal ball “ and “ Queen of Spades “.
Seems like “ Boat on the River “ is their number one popular song in Europe, but in the USA , Blue Collar Man, Come Sail Away, Renegade are more popular songs.
I was in my own world, and screaming and dancing all the time during the show.
At first I thought Ray was quiet, but when the show finished Ray’s voice was something different, like he almost lost his voice. He said he was screaming as well during the opening song “ Blue Collar Man “ and almost broke his voice . LOL
I was so busy with my own screaming I didn’t even know. His voice is back now LOL
A lady next to Ray was sitting most of the time during the show but when the song “ Come sail away “ started, suddenly she stood up and started singing “ come sail away, come sail away “ loudly with everyone.
At the end of the show, Styx were throwing many stuffs, gifts to the audience. We were far from the front, so we couldn’t see what they threw.
And also they were sweet and posing for audience taking photos.
Tommy was the last one to leave, shaking hands with his fans and finally the crew called him and he was rushing off the stage while waving to audience .
Styx and Reo Speedwagon have been taking turns opening for each other, during this concert series.
Next one up was Reo, but I was not so familiar with their music and Ray is not a huge fan of their music, although he said he likes two or three of their songs, so after Styx left, we also left the concert.
I haven’t been to music concert for ages, since when I was in Japan, more than 10 years ago. The Alfee’s Japanese rock group live concert was always my favorite but since then I couldn’t find anyone.
I became a fan of Queen later but Freddie Mercury had already passed away, so I couldn‘t see them.
I’m a new Styx fan.
So happy to find another favorite, and they are still touring !!!
It was my first time to get to their live concert.
Thank you to all the Styx members who gave us a magical night.
We had a really wonderful time !
It was a killer show in Tucson !!!
We will get better seats next time. And will take better photos.
