It’s always inspiring people who achieved their dream.
In this Beijing Olympics, I have no doubt Michael Phelps is the most successful athlete who challenged 5 individual swimming competitions and won all of them and made world records, plus 3 team competitions relay, and received total of 8 gold medals.
In the beginning , I was more thinking about my favorite subjects , gymnastics and track & field, and had no interest for swimming competitions.
US broadcast showed mainly swimming most of the time and I wasn’t watching Phelps interviews at that time.
But later, by chance I watched one of his interviews and found good impression about him seeing his talking.
He is a very nice guy, nothing arrogant, snob against anyone, humble and humility.
Later, I started checking his records and biography and was shocked to see his amazing success.
Analyzing the key of successful people is one of my favorite things to do. There are always common things for successful people.
Here are some Phelps quotes below,
“ I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it. I think your mind really controls everything.
- Michael Phelps “
“Everything is possible if you dream. My coach helped me to dream big. When I got to him he said to me that I should dream big. He told me to dream as big as you can. - Michael Phelps ”
Very successful people are all thinking big, and have strong beliefs for their dream.
I recently found a great book called “ The winning mind set “ by Jim Brault and Kevin Seaman.
Seems like many athletes and their coaches are having this book for motivation.

Successful people are not limiting their belief. They change their beliefs and reinforcing and expanding positive reference and imagining success.
I always hear that the best time to visualizing success is before going to sleep. And visualizing your success as if you already achieved it.
I’ve read that famous legendary rock star Freddie Mercury also was doing that , he was acting like a superstar all the time even when he was a teenager and not successful yet. “ I’m a star ! “
He was telling his class mates , and many of them just laughed at him because he was not a star at that time. But Freddie just said “ You’ll see . “ with confidence.
He had sense of humor , so his attitude was never called arrogant or snob.
His singing showed how emotional he was, so his emotional beliefs must have been so strong and powerful.
Visualizing big success picture, and focusing on what we want influences our future.
Mind influences everything.
The book also tells that if you had a problem , focus on your solutions instead of your problem. Focusing on your problems create a ripple effect, magnifying the experience in your mind.
Focusing on what you want, not what you don’t want.
Since I found out this beliefs, I could see which athletes can be successful seeing their attitude. Especially right before the competitions.
People’s minds are usually unstable, depending on the situation, it can change easily.
Especially Olympics game is the biggest competition for athletes , it’s hard to avoid media pressures, nerve, and also negativities are everywhere.
Michael Phelps is quite successful and he kept his mindset amazingly perfect.
He was definitely the favorite swimmer in the U.S.A.
I wonder how he could handle those media pressure ? He just focused on to win and he said that while he was swimming he didn’t think anything.
Habit
“ If I do not practice for one day, I know it. If I do not practice the next day, the orchestra knows it. If I do not practice the third day, the whole world knows it. - Ignace Paderewski, Polish Pianist “
Interesting thing is that a runner Michael Johnson and a figure skater Evgeny Plushenko were saying same thing.
“ I’ve never been afraid to fail. - Michael Johnson “
“ I’m not afraid to lose . - Evgeny Plushenko “
They both were only focusing to win, and no fear for losing.
