Freddie Mercury
I didn't know about Freddie Mercury except the name of English rock group " Queen" until a year ago.
Queen is famous all over the world.
But maybe I didn't know much about them because Freddie's looking was not my type and so had never paid attention to him and Queen.
I'll get back to Queen in a minute, but first, a little background about my music interests. I have been big fan of Japanese rock group " The Alfee" for a long time . Once I saw their live concert, it was really difficult to get big impression with other musicians' music.
Because all of Alfee's music is very unique and variety, rock, classic, heavy metal (classic style), dancing, acoustic, and also simple music when they need to make a music for TV drama and movie.
Their live event set was always amazing , big fireworks, colorful spot lights were always beautiful.
Their lead guitarist is Toshihiko Takamizawa , and he is also the composer of all The Alfee's music. He is their lead electric guitarist, composer and sometimes lead vocalist, and background vocalist.
There are three members in the Alfee and all of them are vocalists, depending on the music.
Their lead vocalist is usually their bass guitarist.
My husband Ray has been big fan of Queen since when he was 14 years old. We got married about four years ago and he often plays Queen's music.
But before seeing them perform on video I didn't feel impress anything from seeing their pictures and music .
Since Freddie Mercury's death in 1991, Ray always felt Freddie is irreplaceable but because he missed hearing new music from Freddie who was his favorite singer / composer, he would keep a lookout for singers and musicians who might have similar voice and music as Freddie Mercury.
Years later he found out that one of Queen's fans, whose name is Valensia, and who happened to be a singer / composer / mulch-instrumentalist, had made several CD's which included his original compositions as well as several covers of Queen's music and including Freddie Mercury's " Bohemian Rhapsody".
Mercury's music is very complicated and very difficult to sing, so Ray was curious to listen to Valensia's singing and also how he played all the musical instruments for it and so he bought his CD.
Valensia is a singer and mulch-instrumentalist ( main instruments are keyboards and guitar) from the Netherlands.
When Ray was playing Valensia 's version of " Bohemian Rhapsody", I felt something different from Freddie Mercury's singing.
Ray thought Valensia is singing really well, and especially when compared to many other people who tried.
Since then I was getting curious, and asked Ray if I can compare Freddie Mercury and Valensia.
Then he played Freddie's " Bohemian Rhapsody".
I felt much more deep feeling from Freddie's singing, and his voice is very strong and high.
" Freddie is much better " I said .
Ray said " Of course, because Freddie's voice is unique and he is the composer of this music ."
Then I started watching one of Queen's " Queen Greatest Hits " videos .
From the beginning, I was shocked !
They were singing " We will rock you " in the forest where there were no echo, and Freddie's singing was just amazing!
I've never seen someone who can sing like that, using all his facial muscles and body.
His body looked like music machine with super powerful voice.
All his mind, body and music were connected and altogether.
Why haven't I ever seen his performance before even though Queen is very famous in Japan, for a long time ?
He was not only a talented singer, but his creativity for all his unique and variety of music, and stage and video sets, dancing rhythm, piano playing.
He was doing everything.
I just think Freddie Mercury was a genius.
