I’m feeling that ice shows are so different depending on country, and my favorite ice show I’ve ever seen is still Olympic French Gala which was held in Bercy, France 2006.
Because it was completely entertainment. I could not see the live show and I watched it only by DVD, but I’m still enjoying. In opening show, there were only professional skaters who can dance well ( balletic movement ) And the spot lights setting was very artistic and unique, using variety colors of spot lights.
Johnny was also attending the show, and somehow I thought it fits him.
Recently , Dream on ice show was held in Japan and it was included all the top Japanese eligible skaters and Johnny Weir, Stephane Lambiel and Sara Meier were the guest skaters.
I haven’t seen the complete show, and just watched some skaters performances on YouTube, and could not find the opening and finale show.
Many Japanese skaters were doing Latin theme of music ( tango & etc.. ) with black & red costumes. And I’ve read about it they were doing their new SP ( for next season ) in the show.
I wonder why ??
And by reading some comments , I saw many people were talking about technical parts element to element, jumps, spins and step sequences. Also choreography and no difference from their comment from competitions.
It’s an ice show, I only care for whole the performance, creativity, well balanced movements based on music and music connection and expression.
But I’m so picky for artistry . If my soul doesn’t move to performances, I get bored.
Outgoing performances to audience are easier and more clear to see and understand for people who are only using left brain while watching them.
Johnny’s performances are usually subtle and some people seems like can not see his world.
I’ve never found anything boring about Johnny’s EX. The only one I’m not crazy about is his “feeling good” number, maybe because the music is not
my taste.
But generally speaking, he is so creative in EX and ice shows.
Especially his Fallen Angels, My way, Ave Maria really really touch my heart.
His performances are usually not out going to the audience, so some people might not get it and can not relate to it , can not see his world.
But it’s so deep for me and it can delete all the other out going performances from my mind. (this happened actually many times in the past.)
It may be a matter of whether people watch using their right brain or using left brain.
But subtle performances like Johnny’s may need right brain to watch and I guess I’m more of a right brain person.
Festa Ice show that was held in Korea sounded like more entertainment, they invited a lot of international skaters and putting more spots. And audience were just incredibly exploded.
Johnny was saying that Korea audience gave all the skaters a big excitement.
I think reaction from audience influence skater’s mind.
Johnny’s next show will be Sun Valley in the middle of July. Hopefully, he will enjoy and will have a great time there.
I wish I could go there, it sounded like very beautiful place…
